St. Louis Job Corps students use their skills
and expertise to help other youth in need

St. Louis Job Corps Center (SLJCC) staff and students from the Home Building Maintenance (HBI) and Cement Masonry trades have been lending their skills and abilities in the construction of a new vocational training facility for the Missouri Hills program. battery of social services for juvenile offenders including academic and vocational training and psychological assessment and treatment.

Missouri Hills received funding from the “Going Home” grant through the US Department of Justice for the construction of a new vocational facility. To make the most of the grant, funds were used to purchase the needed materials and the St. Louis Job Corps Center was contacted to provide the labor and expertise needed to construct the building. Committed to working collaboratively with other state agencies, St. Louis Job Corps agreed to participate.

As a result of this collaborative effort, the Missouri Hills facility, a 2-story, 4800 sq. ft. training center, will be the largest facility in the state built with the grant funds. According to Bill McKenna with Missouri Hills, other regions in the state had to settle for smaller buildings because of the construction costs. Job Corps students’ involvement includes forming and pouring the foundation, framing in the building, roughing in the plumbing and electric and roofing.

The service of the St. Louis Job Corps students and staff is provided free of charge to Missouri Hills and will serve as a vocational student training (VST) project. VST projects provide students an opportunity for practical application of the skills and techniques learned in the classroom.

Approximately 20 Job Corps students have been working on the project which began in August and is scheduled for completion sometime in mid-November according to the trade instructors.
